Run Over but Unharmed   2 comments

The members of the Christian Science community in Canberra share their experiences and thoughts on Christian Science:

Prior to these current COVID restrictions I travelled often with my sister.  In 2019 she was invited to do a series of Christian Science lectures across the US.   I was her support person.  It was my job to take charge of the everyday organisational issues such as getting through airports and finding meals in strange cities.  More importantly it was my job to prayerfully protect and support her lecturing work.

My prayers were prayers of affirmation, not petition.  I acknowledged God as divine Love and as infinite all-knowing Mind.  I acknowledged that these lectures were right ideas and as such they were God’s ideas, as all right activity is God’s.  I knew that God protected and brought to fruition all His ideas harmoniously.  I also knew that all those involved in bringing these lectures to the public were protected in this work and that only good could come of these activities.

On this particular day the lecture went off very harmoniously.  The venue was perfect, the audience large and focussed and my sister spoke with such sincerity and inspiration that all were moved by the words.  Afterwards we were taken back to our accommodation by one of the organisers.  When we arrived the driver pulled up in the driveway and my sister jumped out.  For a moment I sat half in and half out of the back seat while I passed bags and coats out to my sister.  Without checking whether we were fully out the driver suddenly started forward.  My sister immediately called for her to stop which she did.  The quick movement of the car jerked me out onto the driveway.   I didn’t fall but I landed awkwardly and the car came to a stop completely on my right foot.   This wasn’t a small car and the pressure on my foot was immense.  I was wearing only my little ‘going out’ shoes and these offered no protection.  Because of the prayerful work I had been doing during the day I felt no fear.  I also felt no pain.  My sister called out to the driver to back up but she became confused about what had happened and asked a series of questions that didn’t quickly result in her taking the necessary action.

Eventually the driver did back up and I was able to pull my foot away.  Throughout this I continued to feel calm.  Despite the feeling of great pressure, at no point was there any pain or discomfort.  As the driver pulled away we picked up our things and headed inside.  I can honestly say I did not have a single twinge or any indication that anything untoward had happened.  There were absolutely no after effects.  I put this down totally to the fact that I had been keeping my thought fixed on the omnipotence of God, good, during that day and all the previous touring days.  Christian Science teaches me that what I think is very important in determining the events of my life and my wellbeing.  I am hugely grateful for all that I am learning as a student of Christian Science.

Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts.

Practising Christian Healing, A Lecture by Mary Alice Rose   Leave a comment

Practising Christian Healing

What do you think of when you hear the word Christianity? For some today, Christianity may have negative connotations, or perhaps provoke something other than an entirely positive response. But the Christianity I know—the Christianity I understand that Christ Jesus taught—is a vital, crucial agent for healing in the world.

My heart yearns for people to know what Christianity truly means: To me, it’s so about love. And there is no better example in human history of genuine, unconditional love—and its healing effect—than Christ Jesus’ own life. The love he taught and demonstrated actually transformed lives—so it must have been more than mere sympathy or kindness. It must have been the inspiration of divine Love, God, that enabled him to embrace each individual as the beloved child of God.

Living Christianity is about how we can do the same—how Jesus himself expected us to do the same. He taught that those who followed him by living and loving according to his teachings could heal as he did. And he left us with the promise that spiritual healing is possible for everyone to experience and practice.

At the heart of this healing is love—the true vision of our neighbor which flows from God, Love itself. In this lecture, I’ll share how this love impels us to go beyond our preconceived notions and discover more of each individual’s God-derived nature in order to help others. I’ll also discuss some other ideas basic to Christian Science—which is founded on Jesus’ words and works—that allow any of us to heal and be healed.

My hope is that you’ll be able to walk away from this lecture with the essence of true Christianity in your own heart: love that reforms, transforms, and heals.

Mary Alice tells people that the answer to the question of how she started studying Christian Science is not that interesting: she grew up in it. The more interesting question is why she stays with it, and she loves exploring the answer to that compelling question with others.
Mary Alice’s interest in science and technology led to a 20-year career in different areas of applied physical science. Through those years, her love for God permeated every aspect of her daily work. Whether supporting research by tornado chasers as a meteorologist at the National Severe Storms Laboratory in Oklahoma, making live broadcasts during severe weather outbreaks on NOAA Weather Radio, troubleshooting operational software at sea as an engineer and researcher in underwater acoustics, or co-managing a division of 140 engineers and scientists in development of the ground system for the Hubble Space Telescope, prayer was her constant guiding and motivating force.

As interesting as her career was, Mary Alice found that she wanted more time to focus on her most rewarding scientific endeavor: exploring her relationship with God. So, in 2002, Mary Alice made the transition from manager, engineer, and earth scientist to the full-time ministry as a Christian Science practitioner, where divine guidance continues to be her mainstay as she helps people every day in praying about such challenges as careers, finances, health, and relationships. She is also an authorized teacher of this Science and has had a number of articles published in the Christian Science periodicals.

A Christian Science lecture by Stormy Falco

article.271029.large[1]In this hour-long lecture, Discover God – Discover Health, Stormy describes her recovery from a paralysing terminal illness.

When she had nowhere else to turn, Stormy turned to God in prayer – a God she did not know very well, whose existence she had often doubted and who now was the focus of her anger.

She studied the Bible and the textbook of Christian Science, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and learned that God was Love; God did not send sickness.  As her understanding of God grew her health improved.  She learned that there were divine laws that sustained and maintained man.  As she learned to apply these laws she was restored to perfect health.

Stormy is now a full-time Christian Science healer and teacher.  She has travelled the world sharing what she has learned about spiritual healing.

Love Heals – A Talk by Beth Packer   4 comments

It’s Never Too Late to Find a Deeper Understanding of Love

Beth2A ps JuneAt the invitation of the Christian Science Church in Canberra international speaker, Beth Packer, will be speaking to the Canberra community on Sunday 22 September at 2.30 pm in the Reception Room of the Legislative Assembly Building on London Circuit.

Worldwide, people have heard and loved her moving talk titled, “Love Heals”.

Beth says, “I’ve found that people everywhere, at all stages of their lives, are looking for much the same things – to know that there are solutions to their problems – whether they are problems related to health, companionship, family, finances or our individual sense of purpose. We all need to know that we’re not alone or lost in the world, that there is hope and healing”.  She says, “I’ve found through personal experience that the knowledge that God knows each one of us and loves us, is like turning a light on in the darkness, and has brought practical healing solutions to my life even in the toughest, most uncertain times.”

This beautiful talk shows through a personal journey and through healing examples, that the recognition that we are all truly known and deeply loved by God, who is Love, can bring healing and restoration to our lives, our relationships, and our health.  It includes examples of the healing of illness, deafness and severe accident, as well as thoughts of suicide.

Beth said, “Together, we’ll explore our true identity as the dearly beloved of God, a knowledge that can transform our lives, making us happier, healthier, and holier”.  These ideas are based on the teachings of Jesus as recorded in the Bible, and as discussed in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.

Having been both an award winning artist and a successful retailer, Beth has lived with her husband and two girls in both Australia and the Middle East.  Whatever she was involved in, always she found that prayer was her most effective means for solving the practical problems of everyday life.  Eventually, it became clear that this was the best way she could help the world so, fulfilling a lifetime desire to help and heal others, she became a full-time practitioner of Christian Science healing.

Beth is a member of the Christian Science Board of Lectureship.  She travels worldwide from her home on the South Coast of NSW.

This free public lecture is given as a gift from the members of Christian Science Church to the people of Canberra.  It brings a message of hope and reassurance.
